Burnhope transmitting station

Coordinates: 54°49'18" N / 1°42'52" W
The Burnhope station was established by the Independent Television Authority in 1959 to provide the programmes of Tyne-Tees Television to Newcastle and the North-East of England. From 15 July 1974, Burnhope extended it's remit by providing the transmission for the first Independent Local Radio (ILR) service in North-East England - Newcastle's Metro Radio on 97.0 FM. (Now 97.1 FM). The main analogue and digital tv services and FM radio for the immediate area are now transmitted from the BBC site at Pontop Pike, with the exception of Channel 5, whose analogue transmissions come from Burnhope.
