    Radio broadcasting in the United Kingdom began in 1920 (MZX Chelmsford). FM radio was introduced in 1955 and DAB digital radio in 1993 (trial) and 1999 (regular service). The British Broadcasting Corporation – BBC is national public broadcaster, formed in 1922 with stations in London (2LO), Manchester (2ZY) and Birmingham (5IT). Today, the BBC has five major national stations, available on AM/FM/DAB throughout the UK and another five digital-only national stations; 40 local stations in England and the Channel Islands; six regional stations for Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland; and BBC World Service in 28 languages. First private radio station launched in 1973. Broadcasting in the country is regulated by the Office of Communications – Ofcom . Currently there are three national AM or FM commercial stations, 287 local/regional commercial stations and 306 community stations in the UK, using (altogether with the BBC services) over 2000 FM, 300 MW, 3 LW and 1 SW station. On DAB digital radio there are 3 national, 6 regional and over 60 local multiplexes, offering around 400 stations via over 1170 transmitters. Primary language on radio is English, with some stations in minority languages.

    Radio broadcasting in Ireland began in 1926 (2RN Dublin), FM radio was introduced in 1966 and DAB digital radio in 2007. Ireland's national radio and television broadcaster – RTÉ (Raidió Teilifís Éireann) operates four radio networks and five digital radio channels, on LW, FM and DAB. First private radio station launched in 1989. Broadcasting is regulated by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland – BAI . Currently there are two commercial radio networks and more than 70 local and regional radio stations in Ireland; over 430 FM radio transmitters, two active AM transmitters (one LW and one MW), two DAB digital radio multiplexes witn 6 transmitters. Primary languages on radio are English and Irish.
